King's School Rochester Shield
Date
May 2025
Location
Kent
Materials
Oak, Ash, Yew
Finish
Danish Oil
A leaving gift for the departing head of King's School Rochester, Ben Charles. This is a shield made from oak, inlaid with yew, adorned with an ash scallop shell. The name of the school, and the details of Mr Charles' tenure are detailed on scrolls which are laser engraved with the details. The woods in this project were selected because of their importance to the local area. Oak and Ash are both native hardwoods, with Oak being the national tree of England. And Yew being chosen because of a large yew tree which stands prominently in the Vines, a public park which sits in the middle of much of the school's campus.
