Newspaper Board

Date

December 2023, January 2025

Location

Blyth, Kent

Material

Football programme, Newspaper

Glue

PVA

Material Precedent

My interpretation of the Newspaper Wood concept by Mieke Meijer which I had researched and come across in a previous role for PLYable in Blyth. I made two interpretations made from paper items which are usually single use: Newspaper, and Football programmes.
For each of these prototypes I glued each of the individual pages together with PVA, and they were compressed for a week, before being left to dry for several months. The main issue I have come across is the drying time, however I am in the process of investigating how to lower this time. I then flattened the faces of the dried boards with a belt sander and planer to expose the marbled pattern that the individual sheets of paper developed while drying.
The boards are easy to work with because of the soft material, I could very easily band saw, sand, and plane the boards. Despite this the boards were reasonable stiff. and I will definitely use for future non-structural detailing of my projects.
